Posted on: 30-November--0001Reading? Is not trending these days as I say in today’s language! But it is a need to keep reading even short stories, fiction, or any piece of reading material that just keeps the reading habit alive. But unfortunately, not many of us think that this reading isn’t something that is anyone’s priority these days and why is it so? Have you ever thought that our future generation is unaware of the old literature we have, which is beautifully crafted by high-knowledge educators and literature experts, who do you think has the responsibility to build the habit of reading in these young individuals? It’s us! We have to keep this drive running and keeping this thought in mind a very renowned organization MilKar came up with an initiative “MilKar Book-reading Club” A virtual book reading program where orphan children of different organizations will be hearing literature experts, speakers who can give the kids hope of light in their life in the time of Covid-19 where all the outdoor activities are banned and kids are limited to be in one place. This initiative of giving reading sessions virtually started with SOS Children’s Village Pakistan, a collaboration between MilKar and SOS with the sole purpose of developing reading habit for orphan children and to build a future generation of readers. What an initiative!
The session is supposed to be a recurring activity with organizations dealing with orphan children and an activity that will happen twice in a month for SOS that will include a mixture of both fiction and non-fiction, as both are equally important in developing and nurturing a child’s mind. While reading on your own is in itself a wonderful thing, a story or account read aloud can have a much greater impact. A skilled reader can make characters dance out of the page and even breathe life into the dreariest of works. This is essential as a text on its own may or may not capture the interest of an individual but a masterful rendition can lend that certain emotion, that joy, that sadness, that anger, that excitement, or that gravity needed to turn a bunch of words into something so much more, simply by using the voice. Even the most beautifully written text can be rendered meaningless if read in an uninterested and monotonous manner. Reading aloud prevents that and brings out the true essence of the author’s work. A description of a dinner party can set stomachs growling and a mystery can leave the audience gripping their seats in fevered anticipation when read aloud properly. This develops –particularly in children- a love for books and stories. This allows these wonderful things to escape the confines of the curriculum and be read simply for pleasure and the sheer curiosity that is an integral part of human nature. It satisfies the urge to know more, to have an adventure, and to look back in time without the means to do so being strange and alien.
