Posted on: 30-November--0001Pakistan recognized its Flood Heroes on the PM Flood Heroes Awards, Hosted by PMYP, Milkar, and HEC.
Monsoon rains caused the worst flooding in Pakistan's recent history, destroying villages and putting nearly 10 million children in need of immediate, lifesaving assistance, as well as putting them at risk of waterborne diseases, drowning, and malnutrition. In this havoc situation, people of affected communities needed basic facilities and looking for help.
Our youth from different universities across Pakistan took the initiative to help out people of affected areas by collecting donations, food, clothes, and other important products for basic lifestyle. Some of the universities also set up medical camps to provide medical facilities to men, women, and children who got ill or were injured from a disastrous flood.
After seeing all the humanitarian efforts of students, Milkar Pakistan, PMYP, and HEC decided to hold a Program and named the PM Flood Heroes Award to recognize and admire the efforts of students who worked selflessly for the flood victims.
The PM Flood Heroes Award was held on 5th December on the international volunteer to commemorate and celebrate the heroic spirit of those heroes who demonstrated community initiatives, bravery, courage, resilience, and strength during the Flood disaster. Universities across all of Pakistan took part in the program out of which 50 universities with the highest impact were shortlisted. Minister of Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, Mr. Ahsan Iqbal was invited as chief guest. Other NGO heads were also invited as guests of honor including Dr. Mushtaq Mangat-VP-Al Khidmat, Dr. Amjad Saqib-Founder-Akhuwat, Shahid Lone- Chairman- Allah Walay Trust, Fareha Zeeshan-CEO-Million Smiles.
SAPM Shaza Fatima stated in the event, “admired the efforts of volunteers across the country and stated that volunteers nationwide have played a massive role in helping victims of floods get through these difficult circumstances. Unfortunately, the concept of volunteerism or community work is still not as dominant among our youth as it should be. In fact, “the statistics are dismal”, she said. She then announced that under the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme’s “Engagement” goal, the programme will be focusing on promoting volunteerism among the youth.” She also appreciated the teams of Milkar Pakistan and PMYP who made this program happen.
Minister of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Mr. Ahsan Iqbal also shared his views in his speech, He stated “that this year Pakistan has gone through serious disasters which have devastated the country. However, Pakistanis have always come together to support each other and rebuild stronger than ever. This year, volunteers across the country have played an integral role in helping flood victims. He also announced that as Minister of Planning, his goal is to highlight community service in all universities and make that one of the top priority areas moving forward.

“We have gathered here on International Volunteers Day to recognize the volunteers who offered their humanitarian efforts, time, and enthusiasm to affected communities across Pakistan. I appreciate the efforts of PMYP, HEC, and MilKar Pakistan who made this program happen so we can recognize Flood Heroes across Pakistan”
“However, we at Milkar believe that this can change if Pakistan can co-opt its biggest asset - its youth to solve these challenges”
“I commend the work of volunteers in the flood crisis. The remarkable results already achieved by volunteers showed how it is possible to play an active part in shaping a brighter, more sustainable, and more inclusive future”. He also appreciated the efforts of the hundreds of volunteers who have spent their time and effort this year to support fellow citizens in devastating conditions.
